Before You Buy Another Eye Cream, Read This.
There is a moment at every beauty counter where someone gently tells you your face cream is not enough. That the skin around your eyes is special, fragile, ageing faster than the rest of you, and needs its own cream. A smaller jar. A bigger price. And you believe it, because who wants to be the person neglecting their own eyes.
So here is the truth, the kind a friend would tell you, not a salesperson.
An eye cream is, at its core, a moisturiser. A gentler one, made for the thinner, more delicate skin around your eyes, usually carrying lighter concentrations of the same ingredients. That is the whole secret. It is not a separate science. It is a softer version of something you very likely already own, sold to you in a smaller tub at a steeper price.
For most people, the moisturiser you already use will do the job perfectly well around the eyes too. If it is a simple, hydrating cream that just softens and comforts the skin, you can carry it right up to the eye area and stop there. You do not need a second product to do the very same thing.
There is one real reason to own a separate eye cream, and here is how to know if it is you. Look at what you put on your face. Do any mention retinol, vitamin C, glycolic or salicylic acid, or words like anti-ageing, brightening or exfoliating? Do any tingle, or tell you to start slowly? Those are the strong ones. They work beautifully on the face but can sting the delicate eye area, so if you use them, a gentle eye cream gives you something safe to use there instead. If your routine is simply a cleanser, a plain moisturiser and sunscreen, you are not using anything strong, and you do not need one.
As for dark circles, the honest answer depends on where yours come from. If they are caused by tiredness or fluid, rest, hydration and a cold compress in the morning genuinely help. If they are pigmentation, the brownish kind, daily sunscreen and sunglasses stop them deepening, and a gentle brightening ingredient like niacinamide can lighten them slowly. This is the one case where a targeted, eye-formulated product earns its place, giving you those actives in a dose mild enough for the area. But if yours are the bluish shadows or hollows you have had your whole life, those are genetics and the structure of your face. No cream rewrites them, only concealer or, eventually, a professional treatment will.
Séra's Verdict. Here is the simple rule, and you can stop overthinking it tonight. If your skincare is gentle, your moisturiser already works around your eyes. Keep your money. If you use the stronger products on your face, buy one small, gentle eye cream and move on. That is the entire decision. Everything else is a beautifully lit jar selling you a worry you never had. You are allowed to put it back down.
