Men, Here's the Skincare Talk You Never Got.

I was sitting with a group of guy friends when one of them turned and asked me something simple: what does an actual skincare routine look like for a man? Not a joke question, he meant it. So I asked what he currently does. "Honestly? I just wash my face with water." That's when it clicked for me that this was never a men-don't-care problem. It's a nobody-ever-explained-it to them problem.

There's actually a real reason for this, and almost nobody bothers explaining it. Men naturally produce about 20% more collagen than women, due to testosterone, so skin stays thicker, firmer, and wrinkles take longer to show up. But that same testosterone also cranks up oil production, which means bigger pores, more blackheads, more acne. Now add in hours outdoors, sweat, and a blade scraping across your face every couple of days, and you've got the perfect setup for folliculitis : a bacterial infection from irritated, infected hair follicles that is the actual cause of their breakouts. And when fine lines do eventually show up, all that extra collagen means they show up later, but hit deeper.

So here's the actual routine. Not the twelve-step version you see floating around online, the real one, morning and night.

Morning

Cleanser. If you have oily skin, Look for salicylic acid or tea tree oil on the label, either one helps keep oil and pores in check. If you have dry or sensitive skin, choose a gentle cleanser with ingredients like oats, ceramides, or aloe vera that cleanse without stripping your skin. The Cetaphil Cleanser is a great option that checks all the boxes.

Toner (optional, but worth building the habit). Alcohol-free, no exceptions. An alcohol-based toner will dry you out, and your skin often responds by producing even more oil to compensate. Look for something built around green tea or niacinamide instead.

Serum, if you want one. A serum isn't a default step the way cleanser or moisturizer is, it's for a specific concern. Pick one based on what you're actually trying to fix, not because it showed up in every routine you've watched online.

Let's say Vitamin C For example : It's about stopping oxidation. Cut an apple in half and leave both sides out on the counter. The half you've done nothing to starts browning within the hour. Now picture the other half with vitamin C applied to it, it stays pale far longer, barely changing. That browning is oxidation, and it's the same thing happening to your skin over time from sun and pollution. Vitamin C slows it down on your face the same way it does on the apple. Look for a 10-20% concentration.

Acne-prone and oily skin types must go with niacinamide over vitamin C, 5-10% is the range that actually works.

Moisturizer. Oily skin wants a gel or cream-gel, light enough to sit comfortably under sunscreen. Dry skin wants either oat based or ceramides on the label, that's the ingredients doing the actual barrier-repair work.

Sunscreen, the one step you don't get to skip. SPF 50, PA++++ specifically, not the SPF 30 most routines default to, because Indian sun genuinely calls for the higher number.

We recommend : The La Roche-Posay's Anthelios UVMune 400+ Anti-Dark Spots It's lightweight and no white cast.

Night

Double cleanse. One light morning-style wash isn't enough to clear a full day of pollution, sweat, and the sunscreen you put on hours ago, that buildup is exactly what clogs your pores overnight. This is the step men skip the most, and need the most.

Serum, (Optional). Peptides help rebuild collagen without the irritation risk that comes with retinol, a 5-10% peptide serum is a reasonable place to start.

Night moisturiser. Go with a heavier moisturiser than your day formula, your skin is already doing repair work overnight, so a thicker moisturiser just helps that process along instead of fighting it.

SÉRA's Verdict

Change your razor every three to five shaves. Most razor bumps and folliculitis trace back to a blade that's gone dull, not to bad skin. Follow every shave with a calming balm that has niacinamide or aloe vera in it, then actually moisturise, don't skip it just because your face already feels slick.

Stick to these simple skincare basics, and you're all set.
Consistency is all your skin needs to thrive.
