Okay But Do We Really Need Hand Creams?
Short answer, yes. But probably not for the reason you think.
Most people treat their hands as an afterthought. The same body lotion, sometimes a bit of coconut oil, occasionally nothing at all. And then wonder why the skin on their hands looks older than everything else.
Here is the biology. The skin on the backs of your hands has almost no sebaceous glands — the glands responsible for producing the natural oils that keep skin soft and protected. Your face has thousands of them. Your hands have almost none. This means your hands cannot moisturise themselves the way the rest of your body does. Every time you wash them, every time you sanitise, every time you expose them to sun or air conditioning, you are stripping what little protection they have and they cannot rebuild it on their own.
This is why a regular body lotion does not fully cut it for hands. Body lotions are formulated to be lightweight and absorb quickly over large surface areas. They have a higher water content and lighter oils, designed for skin that can do some of the work itself. Hand skin cannot. It needs a higher concentration of occlusives and emollients such ingredients that physically seal moisture in and stay on the surface long enough to matter. The formulation requirement is genuinely different.
What about coconut oil something most Indian households already have. The research is actually positive here. A randomised double-blind clinical study found virgin coconut oil equal to mineral oil as an emollient for dry skin, with significant improvement in skin hydration and barrier function. It works. The caveat is that it is an emollient and occlusive but not a humectant as it seals, but it does not draw water in. Applied on damp skin after washing, it does a real job. Used alone on dry skin, it is sealing in dryness rather than moisture.
The honest answer on hand cream is this: your hands have specific needs that most people address with whatever is nearby. A dedicated hand cream with a humectant to draw water in, an emollient to soften, and an occlusive to seal applied consistently after washing is one of the simplest and most effective things you can do for skin that ages faster than any other part of your body precisely because it is the most ignored.
Séra's Verdict: Your hands will show your age before your face does. Not because of genetics but because of neglect. The skin there cannot protect itself, it needs you to do it. A proper hand cream used consistently after washing is not an indulgence. It is maintenance for the most used skin on your body. If you are going to skip one step in your routine, make sure it is not this one.
